When albums can be picked up for pennies at car boot sales I tend to acquire rather a lot.

The cover is completely shot, I have never heard of the artist, this looks like it is from an era, and probably a genre, I am not too fussed about - how much? 25p - OK I'll have it. So it was with this one.

The album contains many standards as can be seen, just, from the cover shot. The back cover is filled with notes extolling the virtues of Eileen, it starts "Eileen Farrell is a phenomenon. She is the first totally American great singer..." What exactly does that mean? Well it goes on to say "no one ... ,until Eileen Farrell, has so completely absorbed the essence of popular American style." OK, I sort of understand. etc etc. Typical sleeve note hyperbole I expect, but I'm intrigued.

And now having played this album I have to say I am completely sold on Eileen Farrell. Her voice, her phrasing, her interpretation are all bang on. But mainly it's her voice that just leapt out of the speakers at me and demanded my attention, despite being somewhat indifferent to the musical style. I now know a little about her. Her career was focussed mainly in the concert hall and opera, but she also recorded popular music, of which this album I've Got A Right To Sing The Blues! was her first.

Many of my cheap punts at the car boot sales end up being recycled into the charity shops fairly quickly. But this one is a keeper.

It would have been my Dad's birthday today, he would have liked this, and he may well have known of her.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The dodgy 80s. Well, at least anything after the "long 70s" that finally ended around 1982. That's my take on the decade (and of course it got worse in the 90s), and is quite possibly one that is shared by many who, like me, had their musical introduction in the early 70s, or before. It has to do with the production on so many records from the 80s I think - computer generated instruments, dominant drums, "bright" sound, that sort of thing.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">So why do I keep buying 80s albums when I come across them in the charity shops and boot sales?
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">This is one of my latest charity shop "finds". From 1988 an obscure release, and in excellent condition, which are the main reasons I made a charitable donation for it. I suppose the cover art also hinted that there maybe something delicate and acoustic in the grooves which I might have quite liked. Deep down though I knew it was odds on going to be layered with that dodgy 80s production - especially the drums! And in most parts it is, but I do find it acceptable enough in places to have not automatically put it in the out pile.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Caroline Bonnett released three albums between 1988 and 1994, and that is just about all I know about her. She maybe still on the scene, there is some live footage from a September 2015 concert on YouTube which I think is the same lady. The concert took place in Greenland I think.

I picked up this album - Rumplestiltskin's Resolve - a few weeks ago. The cover attracted me initially - not your average cover often = not your average music. I was not familiar with Shawn Phillips, but I did recognise a few of other names in the list of musicians on the album: Caleb Quaye amd Paul Buckmaster who had both appeared on some of the earlier Elton John albums, and the percussionist Bill Summers who had been Herbie Hancock in The Headhunters days. That was more evidence that the album was worth investigating.

Born in Texas, Shawn Phillips started out on his musical career in the Sixties playing with Donovan apparently. He then released a string of albums under his own name throughout the Seventies, so I am a bit suprised I had never heard of him before. Shawn's vocals grate a bit with me at times but the musicianship and arrangements on this album are top notch. How can I categorise it? It's probably best not to, and who needs to really, but I will anyway. It's -rock. That's folk-rock, jazz-rock, prog-rock, funk-rock.

The track I'm featuring picked itself inasmuch as it's title is displayed on the back cover in a different colour to the rest of the tracks. I am assuming that was just a printing error. The back cover also gives the keyboard player - Peter Robinson - almost equal billing to Shawn Phillips. Some of what's going on on this track are reminiscent of Quantum Jump's Lone Ranger. Both tracks would have been recorded around the same time. The keyboardist is Peter Robinson and he had collaborated with one of QJ's founding members - Rupert Hine - before, and had been involved at Farmyard Studio where QJ recorded their first album. Who influenced who, I wonder? Probably just kindred spirits.

Before the bandwidth ran out I was intending on posting The Tonics version of White Christmas which I picked up in a batch of 45s that were free ("oh, just take all those sleeveless ones".

Keane wrote an alternative first verse which sets the tone for a pretty downbeat version of the song. Of course the Keane boys wouldn't actually have been any more likely to have seen snow where they grew up - East Sussex - as that is close to, and south, of London. By no stretch of the imagination my favourite version of White Christmas (I'll stick with Darlene Love in this little batch) but I include it hear as a curiosity.

I got seriously interested in music at the end of 1971. My meagre funds in those days meant my wants list remained long. Trawling the charity shops and car boot sales now finally allows me to, gradually, catch up with many those records that were on the wants list all those years ago, and some that probably weren't. Colosseum are a case in point. I knew of them but I came to the popular music party just as Bowie & Roxy were going overground so anything that could be labelled as Prog Rock was off my radar (yes, I know, Roxy's first album was on the outskirts of Prog). So Colosseum were, at best, at the bottom of my wants list. No reason not to try them for size now though,

Verdict? Ambivalent. Judging by this collection their later album "The Grass Is Greener" could be on my latest wants list but I will be happy to give their earlier work a miss.
<span style="font-family: "Georgia","serif";">Evidently our son was destined not to
meet his friends in Basingstoke this evening. He called me only about 20
minutes into his journey to tell he was stopped on the hard shoulder of the M4
because the driver’s side windscreen wiper had stopped working (it has been a
wet and wild night, and he couldn’t see a thing). I thought I knew how to fix
it but couldn’t really describe it and he had no torch to see what he was doing
anyway. I thought it would be quicker for me to go and sort it out rather than
call out breakdown so went to meet him. After a couple of failed attempts I got
the wiper working again but when we went to start the engine again it wouldn’t
fire – flat battery! Although I had jump leads there was no way to position the
cars so they could reach, so we had to call out breakdown after all. We had to
wait only about 30 minutes for the breakdown guy to arrive and sure enough his
portable battery starter did the trick and we were off and running again. By
this time our son was cold and soaking wet and had decided to call off his trip
to Basingstoke so the plan was to take the next exit off the motorway (only a
mile or so away), turn around at the roundabout and go back home. We went in
convoy, me following in my car. Half way around the roundabout son was
obviously in trouble again and had to pull in. I thought the wiper had stopped
working again, but no, this time there was a problem with the gear stick. It
was wobbling around and not doing anything, evidently a linkage had broken or
detached. So we had to call breakdown again! The same “knight of the road” attended and, as
we suspected, there was nothing he could do at the roadside so my son had to be
towed back home! Three completely unrelated problems in the space of an hour.

I have nothing to play 78s on, so fair enough you might say. But that small detail wouldn't necessarily stop me.

With a name like Ras Prince Monolulu I wondered if it might be calypso or similar, but when I noticed the B side had a "mystery race game with 6 horses" on it I thought probably not. This, stupidly, put the blinkers on my thinking, and when the seller wouldn't budge below a pound (yes, I know, only a pound) that made my mind up to put it back in the box.

Getting home, I found the A-side on youtube.

And the game on the B-side is, apparently, a "mystery" because it has been recorded with six different concentric grooves, each representing a horse, so the winner of the race will depend on where the needle is dropped. That's pretty cool for a 78.

So let's look at the bare facts as they presented themselves this morning:
the 78 was in fantastic condition;
it was by someone called Ras Prince Monolulu;
it had a "mystery game" on the B-side;
it was only a pound for chrissakes (a price I am regularly willing to pay for more run of the mill vinyl);
and I didn't buy it.

I have completely taken leave of my senses, and have been kicking myself ever since - and those six horses have too!

You can read more about Ras Prince Monolulu here.

(Comments in the youtube entry indicate that Ras Prince may have had relatives in Somerset, and it was in Somerset today where I didn't buy this 78).

<span style="font-family: "Georgia","serif";">My home town became internationally
famous in the late 80s and into the 90s for the trip-hop sound of groups such
as Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, and Smith & Mighty. It became known
as the “Bristol Sound” – a laid back, dark, beat heavy concoction. Go back in
time around ten years from “trip-hop” and what could be said to be an antecedent
to that sound was emanating from Bristol in the post punk world of the late 70s
and early 80s. Again it was characterised by distinctive beats and rhythms, dub
and funk based. Then, The Pop Group were probably Bristol’s most high profile
purveyors of the sound, theres was an angry, angular mix of punk, jazz, dub and
funk. At least it was an approximation to funk, for funk didn’t come naturally
to West Country white boys and, by their own admission, although they tried they were some way from perfecting the funk in their early days.<span style="font-family: "Georgia","serif";"> As a unit they
would last long enough to expel two albums and two and a half singles (The
Slits being on one side of their final single). I used the word expel
deliberately as they were definitely out there and I think it describes very
well how their music issued from the speakers.

various members formed the nucleus of a number of new groups including Maximum
Joy and Rip Rig + Panic. Maximum Joy also included members that had formerly
been with Bristol group Glaxo Babies (a great name I’ve always thought, and I
am sure I saw them live once or twice, although it’s all a bit hazy now).
